Welcome to 2023

There are so many ways to begin a New Year. We can look back on the previous year and make a list of all the things we are grateful for. We can look forward and make a list of resolutions of all the positive ways we are planning to change ourselves and our lives. What are we doing at the Blood-Red Pencil? The editors are giving you a month of (insert drumroll), their PET PEEVES!

Let me dive right in with the one that has been plaguing me for most of 2022. But first some background.

If you're reading this blog, you'll know I jumped into the Amazon Kindle Vella publishing platform early in the year. I love it more than ever, so that's not my peeve.

But my pet peeve is related to it. You see, I had to get a new laptop and new MSWord software. And I HATE the newest version of MSWord. In Word 365, the grammar and punctuation errors are relentless. I started making copies of some of the errors in Editor and here are just a handful:

I see a capital, don't you?
I returned it, I swear!

One's enough, thank you!

I cannot imagine writing an authentic-sounding historical novel!
Nope!

An attorney would witness. Period.

Just answer the QUESTION.

GAH!

Yeah, no...

Seriously?
I shudder for all the young writers out there who don't have a solid command of English grammar. They will take these suggestions on faith. Which goes to show you - sharp human eyes still have a role in the publishing world. Am I right?

Do you have any pet peeves about the latest version of Word 365? Writing and publishing in general? Please share in the comments!

Wishing you all a magnificent year of writing, editing, and publishing in 2023.

  1. I turn all that "helpful" stuff off. However, I'm now wondering if I should reconsider for the LOL value. Ha ha. ;-)

    1. I'm with you. I don't have that version of Word, but I don't even enable the "helpful" stuff in the version I have.

    2. I like some of the Editor functions in 365 - really just another revision layer for me. Save for the absurdities.

  2. Yikes! Just trying to figure out the screenshots you posted made my eyes burn. LOL Would hate to have to deal with that. Technology is great, but it can go too far.

  3. Ohhhhh what a perfect way to raise the blood pressure! I haven't moved over to 365, but the day is coming. Thanks for giving me a peek at the fun to come when I do!
