This month at the Blood-Red Pencil, we're promoting our new releases. Well, I had hoped to finish a Women's Fiction book, called Hailey's Chance, by Easter. Then it turned into Mother's Day, and now, it looks like it'll be ready either this month, or maybe by the 4th of July! At least I have a cover to show you.
Turns out I had more thinking and researching to do about adoption in Wisconsin, a topic which I knew little about. Though the story is purely fictional, I don't want to present misleading information.
After various attempts, I finally latched onto Sandy Otto, a helpful social worker at a Wisconsin adoption agency. For her efforts, I'm including her name in the dedication.
Hailey's Chance is a standalone prequel to my December, 2014 release, Christmas Carol, and takes place in the same fictional small town of Deerview. I've become attached to that town, and plan to contribute more books taking place there.
I've included some of the same characters in the new book, even Chris Carol, the waitress who played a starring role in Christmas Carol. However, in Hailey's Chance, I'm also introducing three new people from whose points of view the story is told: That of the wife and husband who have lost their baby, and that of a birth mother who offers her own baby up for adoption.
I'll let you and the whole world know when all is ready!

DeleteThe book I'm working on also includes children adopted out of foster care (although they're adults in the book). Funny how ideas seem to come in clusters.
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued, Morgan. I'll be watching for Hailey's Chance to come out on Amazon because I still prefer hard copies -- although I am getting accustomed to using my Kindle and am liking it better with each book I read.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I grew up in the Midwest and really like a lot of the little towns in Wisconsin, even though I haven't seen them in several decades. (Some that come immediately to mind are Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire, and Tomah.) When I was a child, we traveled many times through Wisconsin on the way to our favorite resort in Minnesota and always stopped to get the wonderful cheeses available there. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. :-)
It's funny, but in Wisconsin, dairy country, their milk is more expensive than elsewhere!

DeleteI so appreciate knowing that other authors' self-imposed deadlines are just as squirrelly as mine. I chase it, it dodges left, I shift left, it dodges right...I can tell you're in love with your topic, Morgan. Do you find that passion helps or hinders you in finishing revisions?
ReplyDeleteBecause I'm going into deep point of view, writing this wears me out at times. I don't even have any personal experience about this topic, but writing and reading can make a person feel as if they do.
DeleteI like it. I know a little about adoption, since two of our three grandsons are adopted. The two boys came to us--son and DIL--in different ways. I'll be sure to read this one.
ReplyDeleteCelia, I'm glad to hear the topic hits home for you. I wish the book were already done, but each time I start writing, I feel I need to add more. I don't want readers to say it could have been fuller and more thought out.
DeleteIt sounds like a great story premise, Morgan. My daughter was a foster parent in CO for awhile, and I was surprised at how much red tape there was. And home inspections. And visitations.
ReplyDeleteI get attached to my characters as well and like to keep breathing life into them in subsequent stories. I feel the same way about my settings, LOL.
Amazing how many people can relate to the adoption topic in some way!
