But a good one was Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy which showed me that a character (the Fool) can be made multi-dimensional purely by what another character (Fitz, the narrator) thinks and observes of him. The Fool is a complete enigma and yet so real I felt like I could reach out and touch him.

Elle
HearWriteNow & Blood-Red PencilElle Carter Nealhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02266309723919011181noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5704943052235281766.post-37014336597805532722011-02-26T20:07:15.355-07:002011-02-26T20:07:15.355-07:00Mary Higgins Clark is a bit of an enigma. It's probably my age, but I mostly just think of him as a dirty old man. I guess if I had to pick an author I would emulate, it would be Mary Stewart in her Merlin Trilogy. I don't often read books more than once, but this threesome I read every few years, just to savor the flow of words, the character development, the sense of place, the conflicts. I discover something new each read.Danihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14471919576687777886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5704943052235281766.post-26430553037155232402011-02-26T19:31:59.111-07:002011-02-26T19:31:59.111-07:00I also learned from reading Mary Higgins. What is the magic that gets her books into readers' hand year after year.

I think part of it is the tone - readers relate to the characters and the moods. I haven't yet had the Eureka moment when I say I've captured the magic that Higgins has, but in a way her work tells me what to aim for.Jillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05152599507268946811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5704943052235281766.post-39450265680632566602011-02-26T15:09:24.822-07:002011-02-26T15:09:24.822-07:00I agree with you, Heidi. I was hoping to learn how to craft mysteries from the master writers. Clark is off my list entirely.

Defining moment book for me was Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land."
