I think the layering is critical, and that the characters have to "earn" that actual consummation moment. I was just working on a sex scene last night, as a matter of fact, and it's on page 195 of the MS. Yes, there's been sexual tension, and some tentative exploration of the budding relationship, but in any book, the sex has to have a reason to be on the page.
