Of course, all up-beat fiction does that, when the reader identifies with the protagonist and their challenges. Perhaps the uniqueness of the fantasy genre is that no empirical constraints are imposed upon the game board. So the reader can be, in the avatar of the protagonist, whatever they wish. And enjoy a frisson of self-liberation, akin to that of dream.Dr John Yeomanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03457052363231077457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5704943052235281766.post-70050147780982080442013-03-30T08:19:37.182-06:002013-03-30T08:19:37.182-06:00The Lord of the Rings has certainly stood the test...The Lord of the Rings has certainly stood the test of time. I find it hard to follow those complicated story lines, different creatures, and a multi-layered fictional world. urban fantasy, however, where much of the world is real as,we know it, might be more appealing. I may have to try one just to see. But other than that, I'll happily dance with TOlkien, with Gaiman, with Guy Gavriel Kay, with Katherine Kurtz, with Pratchett, with Judith Tarr. Coming from a romantic suspense/mystery background, I'm finding it 'slow going' but the author assures me that setting the stage, building the world for the reader takes time, and that fantasy readers of the genre (I'm putting the manuscript somewhere between epic and high fantasy)don't mind a slow pace.

Terry
Terry's Place

Terry Odellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11610682530545306687noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5704943052235281766.post-71190835233109363132013-03-29T17:04:56.089-06:002013-03-29T17:04:56.089-06:00Neil Gaiman's writing leaves me slack-jawed in...Neil Gaiman's writing leaves me slack-jawed in awe.Elspeth Futcherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10330102545384369360noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5704943052235281766.post-86692628360776123402013-03-29T14:18:57.072-06:002013-03-29T14:18:57.072-06:00Sword and Sorcery is my favorite offshoot in fanta...Sword and Sorcery is my favorite offshoot in fantasy.Lucas Darrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01405530729663443670noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5704943052235281766.post-85950694073011722862013-03-29T09:56:16.555-06:002013-03-29T09:56:16.555-06:00Christopher, come write a hilarious post for us at...Christopher, come write a hilarious post for us at the BRP.
