A New Year with New Goals and Plans

Happy New Year, dear writing friends!

As we slide into 2013, what are your writing goals for the future? Even if you don't feel the need for resolutions, I am certain you've given the next few months some thought and consideration, as have I.

Before the week is over, I plan to finish reading Chuck Sambuchino's new book, Create Your Writer Platform: The Key to Building an Audience, Selling More Books, and Finding Success as an Author. With the rapid changes in publishing, many of us are taking full responsibility for marketing our books. Developing a strong platform is a must for the modern author. Stay tuned for a review of the book later this month. I'm excited to read what Chuck has to say. Some of the points he'll cover:
  • The definition of a platform—and why you should start building one now.
  • How to harness the 12 Fundamental Principles of Platform.
  • "Old School" and "New School" approaches to platform, from article writing and conference speaking to website development, blog posts, and social media avenues.
  • How to develop a platform for nonfiction, fiction, and memoir.
In addition to Chuck's invaluable insights, you'll also find 12 case studies from authors with effective platforms, as well as professional advice from literary agents. If you're serious about building a platform tailored to you and your writing—a platform that's going to help you succeed as a writer—look no further than Create Your Writer Platform.

If you happen to be online reading this on the holiday, do leave us a comment and share what's on your writing to-do list this first month of the year!

  1. This looks like a book that would be very helpful, and I hope you share the review with us when you finish reading the book. This whole concept of "platform" is something I'm still not clear about, and I'd like to know if the book would help me figure it all out.

  2. Does it apply to fiction? Michael Hyatt spoke about platform at ACFW. Apparently you can collect a bunch of tweets and make a non-fiction book. I'm not sure about how this works for fiction.

  4. The changes in writing and publising over the last few decades are mind-boggling. We've gone from a modest number of authors who were nurtured and promoted by large publishing houses to almost a do-it-yourself profession that needs "platforms" and boasts myriad writers who produce millions of books annually. My grandfather commented once that he'd gone to Oklahoma in a covered wagon when he was a boy and in his later years had sat in front of his television and watched a man walk on the moon. Do we see a parallel here? To some extent, I think so.

We writers may not need to keep up with the Joneses, but we do need to stay on top of what's happening in the publishing industry -- and it seems to change and evolve almost weekly.

  5. My January goal is to finish final edits on Dismembering the Past, the first in my mystery series starring PI Hallie McAllister.
