Maryann Miller Rides Along In The Corner Cafe: A Tasty Collection of Short Stories

CONTINUING SERIES - 18 Stories! 15 Authors! Talk About A Project!
The Corner Cafe: A Tasty Collection of Short Stories is riding high in sales, after a spectacular performance at its first freebie weekend on June 9 and June 10, 2012.

The book is ready, but the work's not over. Dani Greer, owner of The Blood-Red Pencil, along with Morgan Mandel, Helen Ginger, Maryann Miller, Shonell Bacon, and Audrey Lintner, all contributors to the collection and members of The Blood-Red Pencil, are sharing our ongoing experiences with you about the project in this series. Perhaps, what we've discovered will aid you in your own endeavors.

Riding along with us today is Maryann Miller, an author, editor, actor, director, who mixes a bit of Raymond Chandler noir with "The Twilight Zone," in her contribution of "Over the Threshold."

Here's What Maryann says of her experience with The Corner Cafe project:

1) What surprised you about this endeavor?

How quickly Dani and Helen and Bob were able to pull this all together. Electronic publishing has that advantage over traditional publishing. My next hardback book, Stalking Season, will have taken 18 months from the time of contract signing when it comes out in November.

2) What seemed the most difficult?
For me the most difficult is always the promoting and marketing. We are doing this as a joint venture, so we all are doing our best to spread the word about this terrific book. I am so in awe of people like you, Morgan, and Dani and a few others in the group who are so good at marketing.

3) What proved the most satisfying?
Sharing space with so many talented writers. I have enjoyed the stories so much and really love the eclectic collection of genres and styles.

4) What did you learn?
I am learning a lot about marketing, especially how a co-operative marketing effort works. Being part of a larger group that is promoting really helps drive awareness of the book. This is a good partnership and really works well when everyone does his or her part, even if that part doesn't have quite the reach that other parts have.

5) Would you do it again?
Absolutely. I'd ride with these fine folks again any time, any where.

Please welcome Maryann by leaving a comment about her answers.

  1. Now we have to do it again for Smashwords. I've learned from this experience that an e-book has to be available on all platforms the fans and readers might use. The sooner the better, so no one feels slighted.

  2. I agree, Dani. Not sure I will stick with the Select program at Amazon with my other books. It is not fair to the readers who don't have a Kindle or want to download the Kindle app for their other devices.

  3. I've finished my free days for Angel Sometimes on Amazon, but my KDP days have not ended. Working with Smashwords is my next step in the virtual world.

  4. It was great being part of this project with you, Maryann!

I'll get that Smashwords class going, now that I've done my own book as a guinea pig. lol

  5. The good news is that ebooks have revolutionized indie publishing, making it possible for unknown authors to make a bit of money. The bad news is that to make any money the author has to be relentless about marketing.

Corner Cafe has indeed been a worthwhile project, and I'd enjoy being part of another one. Meanwhile, I have to decide whether to go with KDP or Smashwords for my short story collection.

  6. Glad to ride along with you also, Maryann! I'm doing KDP Select for my next book first, then on to Smashwords to cover all bases!

  7. I had my suspense novel, One Small Victory, on Smashwords but it hardly sold at all there. That is why I pulled it and went with KDP Select. Sales are much better there. Not sure why some books do better at Smashwords than others. My latest e-book, Open Season, was done by a small publisher and they got it in all the e-reading venues themselves. Much easier on the author that way. LOL
